DxO has now brought out two version upgrades of the programs and has undoubtedly pushed the products forwards. Google wasn’t going to support the products, and if either Microsoft or Apple did anything to break them, then it was simply tough luck!Įventually, a company called DxO bought, what would become, the Nik Collection from Google, and it became a commercial product once more. Google loved the mobile product so much that they bought the company.įor a couple of years, it was possible to get the entire Nik Software package as a free download from the Google website. The company also produced a mobile photo-editing tool called Snapseed. The black and white editing tool, Silver Efex, was quickly picked up as being the go-to program. It gets its name from the company who originally developed some great picture editing tools, Nik Software. What is the Nik Collection?īefore we start on the changes made to the package of programs, I think it would be good to recap what the Nik Collection is and a bit of its history. One addition, in particular, is going to speed up the workflow for wedding photographers that use Adobe Photoshop. The recent London at night was 5 frames blended in HDR Efex Pro.The Shipley Windmill image which was a whooping 7 exposures blended together and the Stonehenge image which was also 7 frames blended….The HDR Efex treatment I feel produces an image that isn’t false…but more true to how our eye saw the scene at the time.In last weeks’ article, I talked about an addition to Silver Efex Pro, one of the programs that form the Nik Collection.

Take a look at the Big Ladder archive to view how Nik Effects have enabled us to produce stunning landscapes. Nik software is also famous for Silver Efex Pro which is a ground breaking stylish black and white plugin, turning what can be a bland colour image into a stunning black and white. Other plugins we use from the Nik range are Color Efex Pro which we use predominantly to adjust contrasts only. Many images in the Big Ladder archive use HDR Efex Pro this involves taking 5 bracketed exposures of the same view and using the software to merge the 5 frames into one, creating an image as the eye saw at the time. Nik Software is a suite of Photoshop and Lightroom plugins formally owned by google now owned by DXO. The Big Ladder is proud to have signed as an official ambassador of The Nik Software Collection.
